Neanderthal Crossroads Project: Central Balkans

Co-PIs Drs. Darko Stojanovski and Trajche Nachev have lead excavations at the newly discovered Uzun Mera site in the Republic of North Macedonia. For summer 2022, Drs. Sarah Lacy and Aleta Guadelli will be joining Drs. Stojanovski and Nachev in instructing a Middle Paleolithic field school excavation at the site through the Balkan Heritage Foundation program of field schools. We will also be exploring and surveying cave sites in the vicinity. Students will get hands-on experience with multiple techniques (trench excavation, geo-coring, surface survey, map making) in a country whose Paleolithic history is only just beginning to be uncovered. It is being held June 25-July 17, 2022.
